"I got strong ideas about my house. I'm going to hire the best architect and have him build it in the shape of a rook. Yeah, that's for me. Class. Spiral staircases, parapets, everything. I want to live the rest of my life in a house built exactly like a rook."

Greatest Events

English Calvert Style

Below we chronicle several of the great chess events in history, complete with brief overviews and interactive PGN to play through the games yourself. We have additionally included any pictures and documents that we could find pertaining to that particular tournament.

The events will include everything from small tournaments to world championship cycle (zonal, interzonal, candidates) matches.  Our selections go as far back as the 1851 London International and as recent as Wijk Aan Zee 2001.

We have divided these events into three different eras of chess:

Pre-1948 (From the beginnings of chess to the start of  the Soviet Union's dominance over the World Championship title.)

1948-1975 (Takes us through the "golden age" of chess, from Mikhail Botvinnik's reign to Bobby Fischer.)

1975-Present (The modern age of chess.  Also the time period that computers start to become a factor in the world of chess.)

Reshevsky - Tartakower

(1936 Nottingham)

Fischer - Keres

(1962 Curacao)
