Svetozar Gligoric and
Samuel Reshevsky shared first place at
the 1957 tournament in Dallas, Texas (USA). The
event took place at the Adolphus Hotel from November
30th to December 16th and was the first international
chess tournament to take place in Texas.
The tournament coincided with the height of the cold war
between the USA and the USSR, which partly explains the
absence of Soviet participation. Smyslov and
Bronstein were invited, but could not be there for
various reasons.
Laszlo Szabo, Bent Larsen,
and Fridrik Olafsson were at a distinct
disadvantage, as they appeared at the tournament
straight from their zonal qualifying tournament in the
Netherlands (all three qualified for the interzonal)
without much rest. The other three participants
were Larry Evans, Miguel Najdorf, and
Abe Yanofsky.
The tournament format was a double round robin, with all
participants gaining at least one victory through round
seven. After eleven rounds, Reshevsky had a half
point lead over Gligoric and a full point over Olafsson
and Szabo. Reshevsky then took a bad loss to
Yanofsky in round
twelve (he was actually mated), but held on to tie with Gligoric for first place.
