"I got strong ideas about
my house. I'm going to hire the best architect and have him
build it in the shape of a rook. Yeah, that's for me. Class.
Spiral staircases, parapets, everything. I want to live the rest
of my life in a house built exactly like a rook."
Jose Raul Capablanca and
Mikhail Botvinnik
shared first place in the 1936 Nottingham International,
held at Nottingham University from August 10th - 28th,
1936. The president of the British Chess Federation,
Alderman Derbyshire, organized the event and put up half
of the money to make it a reality.
The tournament included all living world chess
champions;
Max Euwe (the current champion),
Emanual Lasker,
Alexander Alekhine, along with Capablanca.
Additional participants included various top players
from around the world and four of England's most
promising chess players.
Halfway
through the tournament, Botvinnik and Euwe were leading
with 6 points each. Reuben Fine was next at
5.5 points, Samuel Reshevsky next at 5.0 points,
and trailing just behind were Milan Vidmar and
Capablanca at 4.5 points. It was also at this point that
the match was moved to the Great Assembly Hall to
accommodate more people.
Botvinnik
stayed strong throughout and Capablanca stormed back
with a strong second half to force a tie for first
place. The prize for outstanding game went to the
4th round match-up between Botvinnik and Savielly
Tartakower.
